Calderglen Country Park: New Vision New Opportunities
Our Vision
The vision is to maintain and enhance Calderglen Country Park as a welcoming, diverse, vibrant and cost-effective destination which is recognised and valued by the people of South Lanarkshire as a significant community asset. It will remain a sociable place for play, sport and leisure in an inspiring natural setting which contributes to healthier, happier, more connected lives.
1. Nature Trails – There are over eight miles of nature trails, with four official routes.
2. Events Lawn
3. Calder Water
4. Calderglen Zoo
5. Walled Garden
6. Torrance House – 17th century house with adjoining courtyard
Priority Theme 1: Financial Resilience
Strengthen the financial sustainability of Calderglen Country Park by providing income generation, commercial and external funding opportunities alongside improved facilities which are free to access.
Objectives
1. Provide opportunities to generate income at Calderglen through catering, events and innovative chargeable facilities and services.
2. Increase commercial and sponsorship activities which enhance the park and the visitor experience.
3. Explore, develop and secure external funding that can be invested in Calderglen to sustain it for future generations.
4. Secure funding through Section 75 planning obligations / developer contributions.
Priority Theme 2: Health and Wellbeing
Calderglen Country Park supports health and wellbeing, contributes to social inclusion and enhances quality of life for people of all ages and abilities.
Objectives
1. Ensure good connectivity and physical access to Calderglen and improved paths network within the park for residents to enjoy.
2. Enhance visitor facilities to provide a welcoming, attractive and enjoyable place which encourages increased or repeat visits.
3. Maximise opportunities for activities which support physical and mental health and wellbeing.
4. Provide diverse opportunities for physical exercise, sport and recreation.
Priority Theme 3: Woodlands, Landscape and Heritage
Manage, preserve and enhance Calderglen’s unique woodlands, landscape and heritage assets and contribute to South Lanarkshire’s commitments to net zero.
Objectives
1. Protect and enhance green / blue assets and infrastructure, in particular historic features, sensitive habitats and special landscapes.
2. Preserve and enhance historic built assets and aspire to be carbon neutral.
3. Identify and manage pressure points of high usage to ensure Calderglen heritage sites continue to be preserved.
4. Manage our woodlands, landscape and historic built assets so there are opportunities to connect communities to the value of heritage and conservation.
