Calderglen Country Park: Courtyard Buildings

Historic Courtyard Buildings Transformation CG2

The historic courtyard which is long underutilised, is reimagined as a vibrant social and cultural hub.

The existing café is expanded and reconfigured to improve circulation, increase seating capacity, and enhance catering and sanitary facilities.

The courtyard’s architectural character is preserved through sensitive refurbishment, while new interventions introduce comfort, accessibility, and a stronger connection to the surrounding gardens. The space is designed to host events, exhibitions, and informal gatherings, reinforcing its role as a central meeting point within the park.

The Coach House, located near the greenhouse and garden plots, is envisioned to transform into a dedicated educational hub. Structural repairs and internal reconfiguration allow for the creation of open-plan learning spaces, while accessibility upgrades, including a platform lift, ensure inclusive access.

The Coach House will support ranger-led workshops, outdoor classrooms, and seasonal programmes, connecting visitors to the park’s ecology, horticulture, and conservation efforts. Its integration with the adjacent greenhouse allows for hands-on learning experiences, such as seed-to-feed gardening linked to the animal centre.
