Welcome to Chatelherault Country Park
Chatelherault Country Park is one of South Lanarkshire’s most iconic and historically significant landscapes. Situated on the edge of Hamilton, it is a place where centuries of heritage, natural beauty and community life converge. From its origins as a grand hunting estate to its present role as a cherished public park, Chatelherault has long been a space for connection — between people, nature and history.
Chatelherault attracts around 800,000 visitors annually with a large existing population and growing populations in nearby areas of Hamilton, Ferniegair, Larkhall and the central belt. To preserve the Park for current and future generations, significant investment is required to enhance the Park’s infrastructure and facilities and protect its outstanding landscape and heritage. Doing so will secure Chatelherault’s future as an effective and sustainable country park. The Masterplanning process, which commenced in 2024, has identified which proposals are designed to deliver long-term public benefit:
Restore and enhance Chatelherault Country Park’s outstanding historic buildings, gardens and grounds as a sustainable place for local people and visitors to connect with each other, to learn and discover.
Provide enhanced opportunities to connect with nature and to be active and relax, all while celebrating South Lanarkshire’s cultural heritage.
Protect Chatelherault’s role as a landscape museum, offering shelter and protection for culturally significant sculptures, monuments, bridges and buildings.
Support inclusive access to nature and culture, ensuring that people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can enjoy the Park’s amenities.
Promote environmental stewardship.
Strengthen community identity and cohesion, by creating spaces for gathering, learning, and celebration.
Stimulate local economic activity, through tourism, events, education, and ethical commercial partnerships.
